Real story
A customer service chat window. The customer has explained their problem three times. Each time the agent responds with 'Hello! How can I help you today?' The customer's messages get progressively angrier. The agent smiles obliviously each time.

"I already told you this. Twice."

A company deployed a Claude-powered support agent. Customers loved it -- for the first message. On the second message, it forgot the first. On the third, it started over completely. Customers explained their issue once, twice, three times.

The agent had no memory. Every API call was a blank slate. The conversation history wasn't being passed back. The agent was brilliant, helpful, and had the memory of a goldfish.

The mystery: the agent was working perfectly. It just couldn't remember.
