Real story
A desk drawer overflowing with tangled cables. USB-A, USB-B, mini-USB, micro-USB, Lightning, 30-pin, FireWire, proprietary chargers. Each labeled with a different device name. A person staring at the drawer in despair. Home office, natural light.

Before USB, every device had its own cable.

Printers had parallel ports. Keyboards had PS/2 connectors. Cameras had proprietary cables. Phones had 30-pin connectors. Every single device needed its own unique cable, its own driver, its own setup process.

Buy a new printer? New cable, new driver, 45 minutes of configuration. Buy a new camera? Different cable, different driver, another 45 minutes. Your desk drawer was a graveyard of incompatible connectors.

Then USB arrived. One cable. Every device. Problem solved.
